History
Bajirao I laid the foundation in 1730, and the palace became the seat of the Peshwas, who ran the Maratha Empire from Pune for most of the 18th century.
In 1773 the young Peshwa Narayanrao was murdered inside the palace. After the Peshwas lost Pune to the British in 1818, the palace declined, and in 1828 a fire destroyed most of the buildings inside the walls.
What you can see today
The outer fortification walls, the bastions and the gates survive, with the foundations of the palace inside and the gardens around them. The main Delhi Darwaza faces north, towards Delhi.
